Angela Yochem: The Role of Enterprise Architecture in Uncertain Times

Do you drive investment strategy for your company? Forward-thinking companies are realizing that architects are very good at identifying revenue opportunities as well as cost/risk reduction plays. In this session we’ll talk about how enterprise-level architects are well-positioned to drive technology *and* business strategy, and how business transformation can be jump-started by the vision, perspective and creativity of sophisticated architects (now that’s EA 2.0!). We’ll encourage architects to flex their muscles outside the bounds of a traditional architecture job role, describe the steps architects need to take to optimally drive business strategy, and provide lessons-learned along the way.

I believe that touch based computing will be one of the biggest leaps (and trend) in computing over the next five years. Especially with Windows 7 and I'm sure that Apple is not far behind with a touch based solution, so we'll see more and more devices using this interaction model. This will be an exciting time!

OpenSpace - MEBA presentation

This presentation was displayed at the spur of the moment in one of the Open Space discussions about MEBA and the cloud conducted by Jack Greenfield. It was agreed that it will be uploaded and made available at Architect Center for the participants at SAF.

The presentation was originally held at a Norwegian conference with the audience of supply-chain and logistics directors in Norway some weeks before SAF. The intention was to inspire a different approach to partner integration within the context of what is now known as MEBA (Multi Enterprise Business Applications) and some architectural concepts, based on the cross-over between IT and supply-chain, along with that.

A 3 day format with longer breaks between sessions would be good it would allow for more discussion and socialising. I'm not sure the "Pre-Conference" thing worked.

Although this was in San Fransisco we basically did not leave the hotel for three days and it would have been good to have some local flavour pulled in. Maybe we could have had security sessions done on Alcatraz or something ;-) Seriously though a social event done together to see some local attraction would have allowed us to network in a different environment.

Yeah interesting tech, not sure how useful it is in the business environment though..... I'm looking for the other developments of multi touch that the research boys seem to be working on to make it into business.

I think this is a good idea, the main thing I felt with the openspace was a confusion over what the agenda actually was and thus how to select the right topic to go to. There seemed to be a lot of overlap and I wasn't sure what things I would get value from yet I did not have a clear enough idea of what I wanted to propose something. I needed some guidance and there was none.

Working this on the web upfront would give us the chance to cover topics that have strong web support in advance and would also make it more straight forward to justify attendance at the conference to your employer.

Also, to build on this particular focus (open space), I'd like to see if there is a way to record these discussions. They're typically quite dynamic. While I found the mind mapping to be quite good and helpful, even the best mapper and note taker can't catch everything said (or how it's stated). So, for me, having a WMA or MP3 to download while I'm reviewing the mind map or notes would be ideal.

I like this idea. I would consider it as a complement to "in person" proposal-making, too. For example, that's why I asked "Doc" about the ability to propose before day two's open space sessions commenced (although I don't propose anyway, myself).

I could see three days, but I'd be careful to make it much longer. To me, this is like a good meal (fine dining). Take Thomas Keller of The French Laundry (and other fine eating establishments), who often talks about just enough in a portion to leave you wanting more...by design! Rather than over-extending and ending up feeling "stuffed," I'd prefer to leave feeling "Wow! That was a great experience."

Hi Everyone,

At the end of a successful SAF I was left asking myself how could it be made better for next year? Afterall, that was one of the questions on the final survey. I'm putting up my ideas one at a time to help the discussion threads.

Idea 3:

Move the selection of topics for the open space sessions to the web before the conference to give people more time to think of topics. It seems to me that this part of the open space concept would work very well online.

Idea 2:

Change or remove the first day. The first day (the Virtualisaiton and Integration Workshops) was great but I was disappointed that the sessions were more product and less architecture. I still like the idea of having them if the content was different, but I would also be happy to sacrifice them for more content.

Idea 1:

Make it longer. Although 2 days is hard work, I was really left longing for more. This might be moreso the case for us overseas attendees but once you have travelled all that way two days is awfully short. Also, once you have organised everything at work to allow you to be there three days is not that much harder than two.
