The Role of Enterprise Architecture in Uncertain Times
Do you drive investment strategy for your company? Forward-thinking companies are realizing that architects are very good at identifying revenue opportunities as well as cost/risk reduction plays. In this session we’ll talk about how enterprise-level architects are well-positioned to drive technology *and* business strategy, and how business transformation can be jump-started by the vision, perspective and creativity of sophisticated architects (now that’s EA 2.0!). We’ll encourage architects to flex their muscles outside the bounds of a traditional architecture job role, describe the steps architects need to take to optimally drive business strategy, and provide lessons-learned along the way.

Privacy in the Digital Age
Which data breach did you read about this week? Seems like you can’t scan the news without reading about yet another lost laptop, compromised database, or stolen identity. Organizations continue to lose staggering billions of dollars in breaches, yet no one really seems to care—why? Nearly every privacy breach could have been avoided with just a little thought given to process and a small investment in technology—or probably simply using the technology you already have. Although we don’t like to think about it, perhaps the answer lies in tough regulations with stiff penalties—which may be difficult, given that we have generations of people growing up with neither an understanding of nor any expectation of privacy. Steve Riley will explore the vast scope of privacy breaches in recent history, discuss the tradeoffs between privacy and security, and examine how the loss of privacy might fundamentally alter the world we inhabit.

How IT will change in the next decade
Just what are the most disruptive trends that will shake the IT industry in next 10 years or so? We will look into the commoditization of IT, industrialization through virtualization, and cloud computing and the effects of off-shoring IT workforces. We'll also examine the possible impact of social networks to next-generation employees and finally we'll investigate the most probable developments in ubiquitous computing and software engineering.

Comparing Multiple Clouds
Similarly to their real life cousins, not all clouds are equal. In this session, we will be looking at the different clouds available ‘out there’, their pros, their cons, and which cloud is more appropriate for which type of applications.

How Microsoft does IT?
At Microsoft, IT is seen as a strategic partner to the business, and it uses technology innovation to support existing and new business models. MSIT as it is called supports a global workforce, millions of customers, and one of the largest online presences in the industry. Barry will cover key focus areas including the adoption and impact of virtualization; environmental sustainability; data management in MSIT, including one of the largest Master Data Management (MDM) implementations anywhere; and how MSIT utilizes such important concepts as Service Oriented Architecture and advanced user interfaces to deliver business value.

SQL Server Data Services Under the Hood
Learn how we built SQL Server Data Services to address hard distributed systems and operations challenges. We describe how we solved problems like failure detection, leader election, and automatic failover using a new innovation called Distributed Data Fabric. We go deep and elaborate on the changes we made to the core SQL Server RDBMS to ship this massively scalable data service. We also describe the operational systems we use to provision, monitor, and manage SSDS without interrupting the service. Finally, learn how we manage and run this service in our datacenters.

Architectural Foundations – What an Architect Needs to Know?
What does an Architect Need to Know? The quest for conscious competence... Everything, of course! So what does Everything look like? How big is it? What shape is it? What colors are in there? This breakout will focus on discovering that which an architect doesn’t know they don’t know by revealing Everything. By examining the Total Solution Life Cycle and utilizing architectural community, architects can deliver increased value and improve their leadership by amplifying the breadth of their architectural knowledge.

Multi-Enterprise Business Applications
The growing maturity of SOA has increased the need for enterprises to extend value chains beyond their own four walls, by facilitating dynamic business processes that span multiple organizations. At the same time, the advent of cloud computing is ushering in enhanced approaches to bridge existing on-premise investments and to connect to distributed partners. This talk describes an architecture for multi-enterprise business applications, how it addresses many B2B integration challenges today, and how advanced capabilities in the Azure Services Platform can be leveraged to implement these next-generation cloud applications.

Multi channel clients for Web Services
Challenged with generating more eye-balls/impressions for your web properties and/or fostering more active usage of your services? An emerging consumer experience pattern for web services is to complement the browser based user experience with deeply integrated experiences delivered in ubiquitous & familiar consumer channels like mobile phones, PC desktops, and consumer device consoles to address these challenges. Consistent, familiar, and always on experiences to enable seamless & optimized experiences for users to actively consume frequently used services with minimal cross-channel navigations, are the compelling motivating factors for this trend. This session will provide an overview of the broader notion of multi-channel client experiences for Internet Services and drill in to explore related solution architecture patterns for a widely adopted, ubiquitous, and untapped channel – the PC desktop. The scenarios and capabilities discussed will be broadly applicable to consumer experiences for web services of all kinds – Internet scale, Intranet, and Extranet.

Growing Architectural Communities
In this session we will explore how you can benefit from regularly scheduled in-person meetings with other architects from outside your company in order to be more effective professionally and personally. Topics will include forming and participating in in-person and on-line architecture groups such as Architecture Special Interest Groups (ArSigs) that can be stand-alone or created as spinoffs from other more technically focused user groups, chapters of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) as well as other community based groups

21st Century Networking
You’ve heard it before: “de-perimeterization,” “death of the DMZ,” “firewalls are useless,” and so on. Sure, it’s fun to talk about such things. But what happens when you can finally live in such a world? How do you build and manage it? The technology is ready, so what’s holding you back? Over the years, Steve Riley has spoken about the evolution of security, how networks must change to meet the requirements of modern-day business, and how protecting data is becoming paramount. Finally, the necessary technologies have converged for you to build and manage the secure clients and the Internet-connected data center that make tomorrow’s vision a reality today. Come learn how you can do this now.

Global Class Computing
A common misconception is Microsoft is not an IT operations organization. In fact, Microsoft is one of the largest IT operations in the industry. While Microsoft introduces more and more Software + Service solutions to market, what does it take to deliver these services at massive scale with increased efficiencies? As they makes significant investments into the competitive cloud market, this session discusses Microsoft’s foundation datacenter services running some of the largest IT environments in the world.
